Topic: Violence and abuse

Seksuell kontroll og -vold i unges relasjoner på tvers av minoritets- og majoritetssamfunn

What are the differences and similarities in sexual violence and control between the minority population and the majority population? What do the perpetrators of sexual violence with minority backgrounds tell us about the motivations behind their actions? This research project aims to answer these questions.

The debate on "honor-based violence" and "negative social control" has received a great deal of attention over the past years. Our goal is to contribute to a deeper understanding of these topics and to better conceptualizations of sexual violence in minority communities. By examining sexual violence in various contexts, we aim to enhance understanding of it as a phenomenon while avoiding the "comparative gap." This gap refers to the discrepancy where Western ideals of equality and individual freedom are contrasted with practices like "honor-based violence" in other cultures. Our research project addresses this by comparing sexual violence and control within both minority and majority communities.

The project includes a comparative analysis of two qualitative data sets. The first dataset is from the project "Sexual violence in young people’s close relationships – victims, perpetrators and institutional frameworks". This dataset consists of qualitative interviews with young people with a majority background who have been victims of sexual violence in youth intimate partner relationships (n=16) and with perpetrators of such violations (n=19). The second dataset is qualitative material on exposure to and perpetration of sexual violence and control among people with minority backgrounds. Minority background is defined as either being born outside the Nordic region or having one or two parents who were born outside the Nordic region. This research project will increase the specific knowledge about sexual control and violence in minority communities and strengthen expertise in the use of violence, which has so far not been elucidated from a multicultural perspective.

We are looking for participants

Would you like to take part in our research project?

We are conducting anonymous interviews and are looking for participants over the age of 16 with a minority background, defined as being born outside the Nordic region or having one or both parents born outside the Nordic region. We are interested in speaking with individuals who have experienced unpleasant sexual situations, as well as those who have been accused of such situations or who have inflicted them on others.

Interviews can be conducted in Norwegian, English, Swedish, or Arabic, depending on your preference. If you are interested in participating, please provide your name and phone number using our online form, and we will reach out to you. Rest assured, your personal information will remain confidential and accessible only to the researchers involved in this project.
